Manual Lymphatic Drainage Explained
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic hands-on treatment that encourages the natural movement of lymph fluid. It may help with fluid retention, swelling and a feeling of heaviness. Treatments at our clinic in Angel last 60 minutes, cost £95 and are tailored to your health history and needs.
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic hands-on treatment designed to encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid and support healthy fluid balance within the body. At our chiropractic clinic in Angel, London, MLD is tailored to your individual needs, taking into account your symptoms, health history, recent surgery, medication and overall wellbeing. The treatment uses light, precise movements rather than deep massage, making it a calm and comfortable experience for most clients.
Your MLD treatment is delivered by Ellie Lagowska, who is trained in the Vodder Method.
What can Manual Lymphatic Drainage help with?
MLD may be suitable for people experiencing:
- Fluid retention and puffiness
- Swelling or a feeling of heaviness
- Swelling following certain surgical procedures, when appropriate
- A sedentary lifestyle and prolonged periods of sitting
- A feeling of congestion or sluggishness
- The need for gentle support of normal lymphatic circulation
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is also used as part of specialist lymphoedema care. For diagnosed lymphoedema, treatment should be appropriately assessed and may form part of a wider decongestive lymphatic therapy programme. The NHS describes MLD as one component of decongestive lymphatic therapy for managing lymphoedema.
What happens during an MLD treatment?
Your practitioner will first discuss your health, symptoms and treatment goals.
The treatment itself involves slow, gentle and rhythmic movements applied to the skin to encourage lymphatic fluid movement. Unlike deep tissue or sports massage, MLD uses very light pressure and should not feel painful.
Your treatment will be adapted to your individual circumstances, including your age, health history, medication and any recent procedures.
How often should I have Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
The ideal frequency depends on why you are having MLD and how your body responds to treatment.
For general swelling or fluid retention, we commonly recommend one treatment per week for approximately six weeks, followed by a review of your progress.
Some clients may benefit from a different treatment schedule depending on their individual circumstances. If you are recovering from surgery or have a diagnosed lymphatic condition, your treatment plan should be determined following an appropriate assessment.
Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage painful?
No. MLD is designed to be extremely gentle.
The technique uses light, rhythmic movements rather than the deeper pressure associated with traditional massage. Most clients find the treatment relaxing and comfortable.
Who is Manual Lymphatic Drainage suitable for?
MLD may be appropriate for adults experiencing fluid retention, swelling or a feeling of heaviness, as well as for some people following surgery.
However, MLD is not suitable for everyone. Your practitioner will assess your circumstances before treatment and may recommend medical advice or another healthcare professional where appropriate.
If you have unexplained, sudden or significant swelling, infection, certain heart or kidney conditions, or have recently undergone surgery, please discuss this with your healthcare professional before treatment.
